At 525 Historic Kempsville Apartments, renters can.
The luxury apartment complex, partially built into the old Kempsville High
School building, is the first major development in what will become the
Historic Kempsville district.
Members of the Historic Preservation Commission
toured the completed portion of 525 Historic Kempsville Apartments on Sept. 7.
Developer Jack Pope spent $30 million to preserve
much of the old building and tried to build around original walls and other
structures. It meant building units into the former auditorium, classrooms and
offices, including making a principal’s office into a three-bedroom apartment.
Workers are still constructing two completely new
buildings that will have 144 more units. Those will not be historic, but take
design cues from the old school, Pope said.
In the school building, new light green walls have
taken the place of green tile. Exposed ductwork, wooden beams and large windows
lend an urban look to common spaces and apartments. Lockers still line the
long, newly lighted hallways leading to individual units. Residents can use the
same stairs that former Kempsville students used, complete with the original
treads and banisters.
